Discover Finnish Student Culture
Student culture in Finland may feel different from what you are used to, especially in terms of teaching styles and student-teacher interactions. At Centria, we believe every student is valuable and support everyone on their own path. Our teachers and staff members are approachable, and our culture is based on a flat hierarchy, meaning that students and staff interact in a relaxed and open way. We encourage bold thinking, creativity, and a supportive learning environment where everyone is willing to help.
The Finnish society is rather individualist, and that shows in the way students are expected and encouraged to take responsibility for their studies and success. The studies focus less on the grades, than ensuring students have understood was is being taught. Students are expected to take somewhat ownership of their success, but they have the full support of the teachers and other support staff around. In Finland, the student is seen in a holistic manner – it is not all about the studies, but your wellbeing matters.
Life is about balance. You will not spending all your time studying, you will also have time to meet others and make friends, build your networks. A big part of student life in Finland revolves around student unions, which organize events throughout the year to help newcomers feel welcome and keep student life lively. They also play an important role in representing students’ rights and interests within the university. The best way to meet new people and make friends is by joining events both on and off campus. You will easily recognize students by their overalls—each color represents a different field of study, and the more patches a student has, the more events they have attended!
At Centria, our student union is called COPSA. COPSA organizes a variety of events, including:
- Eka Kerta Bileet – the very first get-together at the start of the academic year
- Tursajaiset – A fun initiation event for new students, with different check-points in the city
- Winter Day Event – Outdoor activities and winter sports
- Sports Sessions – Regular games like football and basketball
