Production technology
The production technology team of around 20 employees is transferring the latest technologies of manufacturing methods and processes to companies in our area.
About our work
We have developed an approach based on close cooperation with businesses to identify their needs, simulations, and laboratory and business demonstrations. These allow companies to assess whether the latest technologies are mature and value-added enough to be worth investing in. The fastest growing areas in our research area are robotics and business applications of artificial intelligence.
We operate in Pietarsaari, Kokkola and Ylivieska, the latter of which is home to our largest laboratory, Robo3D Lab. Robo3D Lab is the largest robotics laboratory in Northern Finland, including development environments for 3D design, 3D printing, drone manufacturing, modelling, simulation and i4.0-type integrated CNC manufacturing. Kokkola has a versatile collaborative robotics (COBOT) fleet and mobile robots for in-company demonstrations. Most recently, the team established in Pietarsaari is expanding our technology transfer activities to the Ostrobothnia region.
AI research across all teams, with a long history of machine learning in production, has been strengthened at Centria. In the production technology team, we focus on AI applications to solve problems related to manufacturing methods and processes: the largest being machine learning and machine vision topics, and the most recent being business-related topics such as sales promotion through AI.
We are constantly evaluating the latest technologies in international networks and are working to launch international projects. Collaboration between all RDI teams at Centria is seamless and we do a lot of projects where several of our teams work cross-fertilisation. Several of our experts are involved in both teaching and RDI activities: this is the basis for a seamless collaboration between teaching and RDI. Examples of this collaboration, which has been going on for several decades, include sharing labs, continuous thesis work on projects, and keeping labs up to date.
